TREE Program What Is TREE?
TREE
(Teaching Responsible Environmental Education) is an environmental education program
designed to provide schoolchildren and teachers with facts on Michigans forests, and
the benefits of forest management.
Our program describes the forests we have in Michigan and how
they are managed. Benefits of management include improved wildlife habitat, wood products
used by everyone, and healthier forests.
The life of a tree is explained using a
cross-section of a tree, or a "tree cookie". By examining a tree cookie,
students understand how a tree puts on growth and how a tree is affected by drought,
harvesting of surrounding trees, wind, fire and other disturbances.
Forest regeneration is discussed;
natural and planted. Students are amazed by the fact that 30 million trees are planted
yearly in Michigan and that even more are regenerated naturally.
Students and teachers are surprised at the multitude of products and bi-products of wood
that we all use every day. Handouts that correlate to the presentation are provided to the
students, along with additional materials.

This excellent forestry education program has
been well received in hundreds of schools throughout the state. This fact filled program
is aimed at the 5th grade level, but easily adapted to older or younger audiences.
Our goal is to educate on how managed forests can continue to provide
recreational opportunities, necessary wildlife habitat and valuable wood products while
sustaining healthy, bountiful forests.
